About the Department

The Department of History at Dr. B. R. Ambedkar College -Affiliated to the University of Kalyani—was founded in 1973 and provides NEP 2020 programs in History Major and Minor. History Department provides a conducive academic environment for the study of both Indian and world history. The department emphasizes the teaching of history from prehistoric times to contemporary India, European history from the medieval era to the twentieth century, and world history of the twentieth century. Faculty members primarily concentrate on India's interactions with the ancient world and Europe as well. Each course covers topics related to Ancient India, Medieval India, Modern India, the emergence of the Modern West, and European history, including international relations and the histories of China and Japan, with a particular focus on transitional periods in Indian history. The NEP system 2020 incorporates both world history and Indian history across different eras, establishing connections among various historical facts. The teaching and learning approach emphasizes discussions and debates regarding early modern Indian, Indo-Islamic, and European intellectual traditions; concepts of kingship, theology, political legitimacy, and governance in South Asia and within the British Empire; and social-religious studies related to India and Islamic traditions. In addition to these specific academic goals, the department's broader objective is to cultivate socially conscious citizens who can leverage the insights gained from examining both distant and recent history to better comprehend their surroundings and engage with the world responsibly.

The Department's Objective:

>Produce outstanding academics who push the boundaries of historical investigation.

>To instill in students a sense of research, writing, and teaching skills that will enable them to compete for academic and non-academic employment across the nation.

> Educate undergraduate students and assist them in building their own analytical and communication skills, which will be useful in whatever they choose to pursue.

>Reach out to the public in order to increase their grasp of history and to foster a respect for historical thought while also discovering local history.

A hallmark of the department is the strong, supportive relationship between students and teachers. The faculty is approachable and dedicated to mentoring students, ensuring a nurturing and conducive learning environment.
