About the Department

Department of Philosophy is one of the popular departments of Dr. B R Ambedkar College- Affiliated to the University of Kalyani. The department has offered Major or Minor course of Philosophy under the system of NEP 2020 according to the University of Kalyani. Previously, many students have graduated from the Department of Philosophy as Honours and General candidates and placed themselves in higher studies. Philosophy, as a mother subject, enlightens a student with the virtue of reading his own psyche and understanding other souls. It begins from where science and religion, the two extreme poles of human life, end. It neither subscribes to the absolute empiricism of science nor to the absolute dogmatism of religion. Our department helps our students in exploring from East to West. Philosophy, the mother of all branches of human knowledge, is regarded as the best of all the inspirational goddesses of literature, science, and the arts. The roots of all the trends of modern thought as well as the postmodern can be traced in philosophy. Philosophy is the instrument in the mind of man for the emancipation of mankind. Philosophy is a way of thinking about certain subjects such as ethics, thought, existence, time, meaning, and value. It always aims to provide comprehensive knowledge of all aspects related to our lives and world. Philosophy, being a critical inquiry, strengthens our conceptual knowledge, sharpens our thinking mind, enriches our understanding, and expands our mental skyline. The Department of Philosophy seeks to acquaint students with various philosophical traditions, to present the chief philosophical problems and types of philosophy, major figures of thought, and to help students cultivate the art and skill of philosophical analysis as well as the intellectual and moral virtues of the discipline of philosophy. Students who take philosophy engage in a systematic and sustained examination of the basic concepts of life, such as justice, knowledge, goodness, the self, meaning, thought, and action important to human existence. They acquire historical perspective on the diversity of human thought and tolerance for the alternative opinions of others. Students develop autonomy in their decision-making. Moreover, the philosophy program inculcates in students a sense of the value and limits of philosophy, a reflective attitude and sensitivity to the subtleties and complexities of philosophical judgments, and a lifelong commitment to learning and inquiry.

Aims of the department:

1. The department aims to carry out the advanced study on Indian, Western, and ethics.

2. To develop critical thinking in the fields of philosophy, ethics, culture, religion, and applied ethics through special lectures, special classes, and seminars.
